Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is suing the company behind ChatGPT.
Bird accuses OpenAI of hurting Iowa children and deceiving parents. Bird says the company is breaching the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act by misleading the public into believing the software is safe and reliable. Bird is taking aim at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of artificial intelligence.
“OpenAI is hurting kids, and they are lying to Iowans,” Bird said. “OpenAI claims ChatGPT is safe while it’s giving dangerous medical advice, encouraging people to hurt others and coaching people to commit suicide—all while pretending to be their fake friend. My lawsuit is about protecting our kids and holding OpenAI accountable under our state law.”
Seven other states have also launched lawsuits against the company.
